TWA and Pan Am: the Silver Age of Air Transit by Billie Dreisbach
Up until the 30s, air traveling was dangerous but not so glamorous. Lacking pressurization stuck airplanes to lower altitudes, and their lack of ability to rise above trouble in the air unnerved many. Flight attendants were first hired to calm passengers down.
Halfway through the decade, airline producer Boeing began to market pressurized planes and the first Golden Age of flight began. Two companies specifically, TWA and Pan Am, typified the glamorous characteristics of flight and built up the companies by offering transit and a full experience.
Appointments on planes got to be extravagant, clearly aimed toward an upper class type of consumer. A TWA brochure from around 1940 shows huge cabins with wide, comfy seats in front of each other, presented as a fancy club. Another ad from the same company displays a smiling attendant viewing passengers play a game of cards about a tray that's been set up for them. No crowds here - usually, flyers had 6" more space between seats than today's travelers do.
Other brands came aboard the bandwagon. United's Douglas Sleeper Transport brought in consumers with ads showcasing passengers eating breakfast lying back. From Key West, Florida, meal deals complete with on-board musician, flew tourists to Cuba every evening. After a night on the town, they would come back to the airport for a breakfast home.
The most recognized icon of this age was made by TWA's chief rival for international flights, Pan Am. The Pan Am airplanes were, and still remain, the emblem of lavish flying. The insides of these heavy "airships" were divided into a collection of lounges, restaurants, sleep berths, freshening rooms, and luxury compartments for those who could afford the very best.
WWII finished the first epoch of lavish air transit, but after the war PA was advertising a new initiative: the double level airplane, with sitting room retro in relation to traditional airships. By the end of the decade, PA was also selling one-night "stateroom" packages to Paris. Following a luxurious dinner in the club lounge, you transformed your chair into a bed, pulled a set of blinds, and slumbered in privacy until getting awakened for the next meal just in time to dine, get yourself together, and land.
The following golden age for air travel was the flowering of jet technology. While a flyer in 1959 would look to travel no more than about 150 miles per hour, that speed doubled over the next ten years. Quickness was the next luxury. TWA presented its business as the fastest, effectual, and above all sophisticated company, with meals worthy of a 4-star restaurant. It was not out of the ordinary for a columnist, in marking a trip, to applaud the food, or for ads to tempt consumers with in-flight menus that promised filet mignon, chilled champagne, and a fine wines menu.
This was also the age of the glamorized stewardess, when advertisements saying "Fly Me" hinted at the guarantee of not-so-available sexual escapades and female personnel had to posses very strict body standards to hold onto their positions.
Oh yeah, it was a pampered, thrilling avenue to travel, but only if you could afford it. The price of a standard both ways pass from New York to Los Angeles in the late 50s was just over two hundred dollars - one and a half thousand today!
